CHAIN$

22 Sep – 18 Oct 2025

Tātou – 133 Line Road, Glen Innes
The Good The Bad – 11 Mayfair Place, Glen Innes

CHAIN$ is divided into two distinct yet interconnected halves, each reflecting Gary’s personal narrative and artistic evolution. His first solo gallery exhibition since Kenese at Māngere Arts Centre, 2020.

One half features mannequin body parts adorned with chain patterns, a contemporary reinterpretation of cultural tattooing practices. Rather than traditional Pasifika motifs, Gary draws from the visual language of his urban surroundings—graffiti, architecture, and industrial textures—to express his identity as a New Zealand-born Samoan. These patterns serve as a metaphor for belonging, adaptation, and the layered complexities of cultural representation.

The other half showcases a series of illuminated lightboxes, marking the culmination of Gary’s ongoing experimentation with materials and fabrication techniques. Each piece is meticulously crafted in his workshop, combining precision with personal symbolism. The lighting design is a collaborative effort with Mark Gibson of Orb Electrics, whose expertise brings a dynamic interplay of light and form to the works, enhancing their emotional and spatial resonance.
